In this training, you will:

- Go deep on how kids on the autism spectrum think and learn based on the latest research so that you can feel confident you understand your clients' learning style way beyond the surface level​.

- Learn an autism-specific process that will allow you to generate a robust list of hypotheses and interventions every time you sit down with a new goal so that you can stop dreading treatment planning and start approaching it with confidence.

- Learn how to shift your perspective to truly consider the experience of your autistic clients. This means looking beyond the behavior you can see and diving deep into how the behavior is influenced by the unique way your client thinks and learns.

I started my career as an OT in early intervention with huge expectations, a serious case of perfectionism, and not enough training to really help the kids I was seeing. Have you been there? It did not feel good.

Years later, after working my way through different settings and receiving a faculty appointment for UNC Chapel Hill's TEACCH® Autism program, I underwent months and months of extensive training in autism interventions and trained teachers, psychologists, and the occasional therapist from around the world in effective autism interventions for functional life skills. I looked back on those years of practice and cataloged the things I wished so badly I had known before. At every training I wondered, "Where on earth are the OTs? WE need this training!"

As the founder of Learn Play Thrive, I've continued to hone my clinical skills and find new ways to teach the therapists who want to do better work with their neurodivergent clients. The Learn Play Thrive Approach to Autism is what I wished I had known all those years ago in early intervention, in school-based practice, and in the clinic. Rachel Dorsey is Autistic. As a speech-therapist, she's watched over and over as mainstream interventions that appear to be "effective" in the short-term totally miss the mark, with devastating consequences on autistic learners in the long term.

Rachel brings her expertise in speech language pathology and her lived experiences as an autistic person to The Learn Play Thrive Approach to Autism. In this course, she teaches about the social preferences and skills of autistic kids, as well as auditory processing differences.

Training Agenda

Recorded pre-requisite video (60 minutes) Before training day, you'll watch a one hour video on Autism Learning Styles to go deep on how autistic kids think and learn, and the strengths of people on the spectrum.

Live training (2 hours total)

​Introduction and overview (10 minutes) - We'll dive into the big picture concepts that lay the foundation for the process.
-
Case study 1 (30 minutes) - I'll walk you through the interpreting behaviors process step-by-step using the behavior of a child who throws toys during free time. I'll show you how to use autism learning styles to write hypotheses and generate interventions.

Case study 2 (70 minutes) - This part is when the learning really happens. Using the behavior of a child who doesn't want to transition between activities, we'll all work through the process together live in the training. You'll be amazed at the hypotheses. and intervention ideas that you are suddenly able to come up with!

Q&A + Ah-ha! Moments (10 minutes) - We'll wrap up by answering questions and sharing our key learning points.

You'll receive a worksheet that you can type into or print out and a workbook to make sure you get the most out of the training and can take it into your practice with confidence and skill.

In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must complete a quiz demonstrating mastery of the course content and complete an anonymous course satisfaction questionnaire.

To receive credit for the live training, you must sign in and out of the training within the first and last 5 minutes.

To receive credit for the replay, you must watch all videos.
